A founder of Dunbia, Jim has been at the helm since 1976.  A butcher by trade, Jim’s entrepreneurial vision has seen Dunbia expand into the leading meat processor that it is today.  Jim was awarded an OBE for Services to Business in Northern Ireland and has been awarded several other prestigious business awards including ‘Large Company Director of the Year’ and an ‘Award for Excellence’ by the Institute of Directors.

Championing the people who make Dunbia the success it is today.  Jim has implemented many training programmes in Dunbia including the Butchery Academy, a butchery apprentice scheme and the Brighter Futures Graduate Programme, which focuses on training the managers of tomorrow by providing them with a sound knowledge of the red meat supply chain from farm to fork.

Brian has been with the Dawn Meats Group since 2001 and was appointed to the senior management team in Dunbia when the joint venture was completed. A Food Science graduate from University College Dublin, Brian worked in the pork processing industry prior to joining Dawn Meats as a site technical manager.  From there he climbed the ranks and took responsibility for the technical department in ROI before taking responsibility for the Group in 2007.

With key involvement in industry, including membership of various Bord Bia advisory panels,  BMPA legal and technical advisory committee, FSAI emerging risks and threats forum and the McDonalds European Technical Advisory Group for Beef, Brian has led the Food Safety and Quality department to several accolades including the Agribusiness Excellence award for Food Safety Week.  Married with 3 young children, which takes up most of his spare time, Brian also enjoys lending a hand on the family farm in Tipperary.  An avid sportsman, he is a keen cyclist and dedicated supporter of the Tipperary hurling team

Helen Rees FCIPD is the HR Director for Dawn Meats with responsibilities for Dunbia in the UK, Dawn Meats in the Republic of Ireland and our various European offices covering over 7,000 employees. Born in Wales, Helen has over 30 years’ experience in human resources and people development gained at board level through the retail, logistics and manufacturing sectors.

Helen’s experience spans an international remit and includes assisting in the delivery of the company’s business plan, through the design and implementation of the human resources strategy. She also has extensive experience in organisational architecture, managing business acquisitions and integration strategy, employee relations, resourcing, reward, performance management, leadership development and succession planning.

Never a dull moment in Dunbia, Helen loves the variety of her work and credits her fellow colleagues with her enjoyment in the role.  Living in Cardiff, with her family, Helen loves to cook wholesome, comfort food particularly steak pie and puff pastry a family favourite.

Tim Barry Finance Director

Originally joining the Dawn Meats Group as a Trainee Accountant in 1994 following completion of his ACCA studies at Waterford Institute of Technology, Tim has a wealth of experience in current accounting practices, shared service environments alongside multi-site and multi-jurisdictional management, which has been gained across a range of industries. A member of the Irish Tax Institute, Tim is also educated in Lean practises, holding a green belt and was appointed to Dunbia’s Executive Board in October 2017.

When not working, Tim’s priority is his family who keep him busy visiting GAA pitches and gymnastics halls with their involvement in sport.  A keen sportsman himself, Tim enjoys running, spinning and water sports.

Enjoying the variety in his work, Tim relishes the current challenge of bringing the business together step-by-step. His favourite meal? Lamb with roasted vegetables, enjoying the natural taste which comes with great quality cuts.

Michael Doran, Retail Commercial Director, joined Dunbia in 1996 as a sales executive following a short career as a graduate trainee within the Agri-Food industry in NI and ROI.

A food science graduate from Queens University Belfast, Michael was always destined for a role within the food industry and has spent the last 20 years developing Dunbia to the award- winning business it is today.  Michael cites his biggest achievements as building effective teams, cultivating strong and strategic customer relationships helping to grow Dunbia into the market leading business it is today.

Naming the best part about working for Dunbia as the entrepreneurial spirit which is engrained into the heritage of the business, as well as the freedom to drive the business forward, Michael has continued to work alongside his colleagues to win new contracts and invest in innovation.

Time off is dedicated to his young family who enjoy exploring the North Coast of Ireland and beyond.

Michael’s favourite beef or lamb dish?  He says it has to be Sirloin, cooked medium with chips- simple but so flavoursome.  It’s a winner every time!

Andrew Smyth Primary Commercial Director

Joining Dunbia as a graduate trainee following completion of his studies at Queens University Belfast in Biochemistry and Agriculture alongside MSc Food Business Management, Andrew is Commercial Primary Director for Dunbia.

Moving to Preston in 2007, Andrew accumulated vast expertise in procurement, planning and commercial sales prior to becoming site MD in 2010.  In 2013, prior to his 30th birthday, Andrew had a key standout moment in his career when he was appointed as MD for operations across Preston and Sawley in North West England and soon after, Felinfach in South Wales.  More recently, Andrew was named as Commercial Primary Director, with responsibility for livestock procurement alongside commercial beef and lamb sales across the group.

Outside of work, Andrew farms at home in Ayrshire where he maintains a 700 strong flock of sheep as well as an ever increasing herd of cattle.  His favourite beef or lamb dish? A comforting, homemade Shepherd’s pie.

Ken Hallahan Operations Director

Joining Dawn Meats as a graduate trainee in 1995 following completion of a BSc Business Studies and Spanish at University of Limerick.  Having undertaken a wide variety of roles from technical and quality through to purchasing, production and more recently operations, Ken has accumulated vast expertise within the red meat industry.  Having many great memories throughout the years, a standout moment for Ken was the opening of a purpose built £30m retail packing facility in South Wales which marked a substantial step forward for group operations.

Starting the day with a good cup of coffee, Ken says that no two days are the same.  With operations covering all four corners of the UK, there are a range of exciting challenges and opportunities emerging at any given time.  A good beef steak is always Ken’s favourite dish whether that is a sirloin, ribeye, rump or fillet, cooked medium or medium rare depending on the cut.  Outside of work, Ken is a keen sportsman and can be found amongst the spectators most weekends at his children’s football and rugby games.

Matthew Dobson Integration Director

Obtaining his Business Studies degree from Ulster University, Matthew spent 2 years in Moy Park before joining the team at Dunbia in 2006.  Starting his career in sales and purchasing, Matthew progressed into operations management in the Primary and Retail facilities before taking up the position of Managing Director for NI & Scotland. Continually striving for better, Matthew undertook a Fellowship in Manufacturing and Management at Cranfield University in 2009 which complemented previous studies abroad, where he developed a strong appreciation for the importance of culture, communication and respect.  The industry recognised that Matthew is one to watch in the sector when he was named as Meat Management Young Manager of the Year, an accolade which Matthew credits to the dynamic working environment within Dunbia as well as his morning coffee! In October 2017 he was named as Integration Director for the company following the merger with Dawn Meats. A family man at heart, Matthew enjoys spending time with his young family or out on the family farm. He is passionate about football, rugby, skiing and a good meal out, there’s nothing better than good company, a nice bottle of red and a medium rare Ribeye!
